Tuesday night Ryan teased us that news of this season’s American Idol guest mentors would be released on the results shows. Instead, last night we learned that next week’s performances will be a repeat of this week as the Top 11 dig into the Lennon-McCartney library again.
If Ryan mentioned the mentors for the season during the Top 12 results show, I missed it. Maybe I dosed off. I know, I know. With riveting viewer calls like those last night I must have been out of my mind.
Needless to say a repeat of this week’s theme can mean one of two things. Either Idol paid big bucks to use the Lennon-McCartney library and want to get its money worth, or next week’s guest mentor backed out on the producers.
Either way, I think it’s time to stage a fan intervention and help the powers that be pick some new and interesting themes for the upcoming weeks. C’mon, how many times can they do the decades?
So tell me what theme would you like to see most on American Idol? Let’s see some creativity here. And who would you like to see as a guest mentor (let’s choose from living artists)?
Now if only I can figure out a way to get the producers to listen to your answers. Hmm . . .
I’ll get us started. Here’s a few of theme weeks I can think of: Alternative, Bluegrass, Celtic, Country, Gospel, Hip Hop, Metal, Polka, Punk, R&B, Reggae. Okay now I need help. I’m out of ideas.
As for guest mentors, I think I’d like to see B.B. King. What about you?

I think a musical theme would be good.
As for a mentor… that I am not sure about.
I think a writer, one that could tell them the feeling and attitude desired in the song.

PJ, that’s a good idea. There are a lot of great soundtracks out there to choose songs from. Thanks.

I’d love to see Hall and Oates, A new Romantics night, Technopop, New Wave, Blondie, Brian Ferry and Roxy Music, Bowie, Madonna, Prince. All have great songs to be covered.

Get Roger Daltry to mentor them. Song of The Who.
I want to see one of them sing Behind Blue Eyes.

I think a great theme would be songs from any previous Top 12 contestant with a record deal. This would allow everyone to find some music that fit their own personal style!

Cezartb, great ideas. I’m all for 80s music.
Dave, that’s a good idea, but I’m afraid that it would be a disaster. Do you think any of this year’s contestants could do a Who song justice?
AllisCat, do you think there are enough songs to choose from past contestants with record deals?
