Six Shows Worth Catching in Reruns the Summer

Since the summer months are filled with reruns on television, you might as well take advantage of the repeats to try out some existing shows that you didn’t get a chance to watch this year.

Here are shows I recommend checking out this summer if you aren’t already watching: (Note: Show times are in EST)

Supernatural — Thursdays at 9 p.m. on CW
Check out this story of two brothers — Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padelecki) — as they travel across the country saving people from things that go bump in the night — urban legends that turn out to be real and deadly.  My favorite series, this show combines the dark and eerie with some witty, if not sarcastic, dialogue and humorous pop culture references.  Did I mention the brothers drive a very cool black 1967 Chevy Impala?

How I Met Your Mother — Mondays at 9:30 p.m. on CBS
The only sitcom I watched this season, How I Met Your Mother kept me in stitches this year.  The story is about how Ted (Josh Radnor) meets the mother of his children, but the real stars of the show are the ultimate wingman Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and the cute, but funny couple of Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall (Jason Segel).

Bones — Fridays at 8 p.m. on Fox
One of the few Fox shows left that are worth watching, Bones follows sexy Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and his partner Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel) as they solve some very cool, but usually older murder cases from what is left of the remains (usually just bones).

Friday Night Lights — Sundays at 9 p.m. on NBC
This freshman drama is based on the movie by the same name, but let me tell you that the TV series is hands above the movie.  Follow High School Football Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and the Panthers through the season and their quest for a state title.  But if you aren’t into Texas football, don’t worry there is plenty of drama to keep you entertained.  Personally, I tune in for the witty dialogue between Taylor and his wife (Connie Britton).

Smallville — Thursdays at 8 p.m. on CW
Follow the escapades of a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) as he comes into his Superman powers.  Also in the series are young versions of Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk) and Lois Lane (Erica Durance).  The episodes with Oliver Queen (Justin Hartley), aka The Green Arrow, and the formation of the Justice League will leave you wanting more.

Numbers — Fridays at 10 p.m. on CBS
This series had one of the best season finales in my opinion.  Tune in to see FBI agent Don Epps (Rob Morrow) and his math whiz brother Charlie (David Krumholtz) solve cases using Don’s gut and Charlie’s math.  A nice break from the serial dramas, Numbers has a nice blend of fun characters and cool intriguing crimes.

I’d also encourage you to check out Heroes, but since I don’t think they are showing the entire season in repeats over the summer, I’d suggest picking it up on DVD.

Personally, I’ll be catching up on CSI, King of Queens, and possibly Desperate Housewives this summer since I missed them during the year.  What do you recommend for summer viewing?
