American Heritage Dictionaries has released “100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know.” But I question the real purpose of this list — and not just because I don’t know the whole list.
In fact, to be honest with you, I probably only know about half these words. How many do you know?
But the real reason I question this list is because I don’t see where some of these words are useful. C’mon, tell me when you’ve had an occasion to use the word Ziggurat?
I’m a fan of a well developed vocabulary. But if we are going to say that there are 100 words that high school graduates need to know then let’s make it a 100 useful words — words that they are bound to hear in every day life that they need to know the meaning of. Practical words.
I nominate mortgage, interest, accrue, resume, interview, taxable, deficit and deficiency to start with. What words would you recommend for high school graduates to know?
