How many of these words do you know?

American Heritage Dictionaries has released “100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know.”  But I question the real purpose of this list — and not just because I don’t know the whole list.

Book jacketIn fact, to be honest with you, I probably only know about half these words.  How many do you know?

But the real reason I question this list is because I don’t see where some of these words are useful.  C’mon, tell me when you’ve had an occasion to use the word Ziggurat?

I’m a fan of a well developed vocabulary.  But if we are going to say that there are 100 words that high school graduates need to know then let’s make it a 100 useful words — words that they are bound  to hear in every day life that they need to know the meaning of.  Practical words.

I nominate mortgage, interest, accrue, resume, interview, taxable, deficit and deficiency to start with.  What words would you recommend for high school graduates to know?

How about incriminate, felony, defamation, default, and dilusional for the group of blame-shifters that we are raising these days?
