In the second installment of CW’s sudsy teen drama, Hidden Palms, we learn a little more about our cast of characters — and it isn’t all pretty.
Please be advised that if you haven’t seen the “New Haven” episode, the following contains spoilers. If you missed the episode, you can watch it on Sundays at 8 p.m.
First we have our lead Johnny (Taylor Handley). I like Johnny. He seems like a nice kid, fresh out of rehab, that just happened to have a bad year. It’s bad enough to witness your father commit suicide, but to move into the room of another teen who took his own life in that very room is just creepy. However, I think he’s down right mean to his mother Karen (Gail O’Grady). Hopefully their conversation towards the end of the episode is the beginning of a much more civil, if not nicer, relationship between the two.
Next we have the way too pretty Greta (Amber Heard) and Johnny’s new crush. Although she’s made out to be this manipulative witch, I think she has a soft, sweet side. However, which persona is her true nature has not yet been revealed. I’ll hold my verdict until we learn a little bit more about her part in Eddie’s death. Whatever her role, she appears to be remorseful.
Then there’s Cliff (Michael Cassidy). You just love to hate this guy. He’s way too charming to be sincere and way too popular to be a true friend. My guess is that he’s Johnny’s mysterious pen pal. I think he’s going to try to put Greta in a bad light.
New this week, we met Nikki (Tessa Thompson) who’s still crushing on Johnny whom she met in rehab. Clearly a party girl, I felt bad for Nikki. It’s tough enough to be a teen and trying to stay sober. But when the one friend she’s trying to impress takes her to a drinking party and then leaves her to talk with another girl, it’s really hard. Looks like Nikki will be back next week.
And my favorite is Liza (Ellary Porterfield), probably because I identify with her the most. We don’t see enough of her to tell you much. She’s a shy, brainiac that has a crush on Johnny. She’s one of the few teens that works. And I think she knows more than what she lets on. Maybe she’s Johnny’s secret pen pal?
Guess I’ll have to wait until next week for another dose of this guilty pleasure.
