The season finale of Bones was a busy one for Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and his partner Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan (Emily Deschanel). Not only did they solve the unusual, but bittersweet murder of Chelsea Cole, a victim of Werner’s Syndrome, they prepared for their honorary roles as maid of honor and best man at Angela’s (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins’ (T.J. Thyne) wedding.
I thought this episode was great. The way the writers weave information about the characters personal life throughout the story leaves you wanting more while not feeling that you missed out on details about the case. You really start to care about the characters as people.
The wedding storyline was well done from the return of Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) as Angela’s dad to choosing the wedding party. I love that Bones, whose feels against marriage are what caused Angela to hesitate at the prospect of marriage originally, was thrilled to be asked despite the prospect of possibly having to wear an ugly bridesmaid dress. Who knew that Bones was so fashion conscious? And the fact that she then wore the dress with the bow in the wrong place made it even funnier.
My only complaint about the wedding was the interruption by the state employee. Did they have to wait until the last minute? Surely it didn’t take a whole week for the state department to run a background check to determine that Angela was indeed already married since she “jumped over a broom with some guy” in Fiji.
However, I did love the scenes between Hodgins and Gibbons. A chivalrous Hodgins tries asking Gibbons for Angela’s hand, but is discouraged by Gibbons not because he doesn’t like Hodgins, but because Angela would kill both of them for treating her like property. But the best part was when Gibbons tells Hodgins about his guitars, his cars and his guns and then warns Hodgins to treat his little girl right. Did anyone else think it was weird that Gibbons didn’t stay to actually see the wedding?
Temperance had her own family affairs to worry about when her father Max (Ryan O’Neal) , a wanted man, returns to give her two gifts — an heirloom ring from her deceased mother and a 1993 of her mother begging Temperance to forgive her parents for leaving her and her brother. The entire encounter was touching as Temperance becomes conflicted about her dislike and distrust for her father.
Meanwhile, a determined Booth pursues Max for his crimes, all the time apologizing to Bones for doing so, and finally arrests him twice. The first time, Booth couldn’t prove his real identity — that Max is one sly guy. But diligent Booth finally gets his guy. The scene for the second arrest was hysterical. Max’s instinct is to flee, but he doesn’t want to lose the little trust he’s built with his daughter. But at the same time, Max can’t go willingly so he and Booth have a fist fight. Max is arrested in the end, but only because he didn’t take the opportunity he had to escape. A fact Booth shares with Bones, who is a step closer to forgiving her parents.
The one bittersweet storyline is that of Zack (Eric Millegan). He’s conflicted about a letter he’s received from the White House requesting his services in Iraq. Scared of being killed, Zack is compelled by a sense of duty and honor to answer this call. After asking for advice from Booth in a way only Zack can, he entrusts Booth with the letter and the task of explaining to the others because Booth understands this call.
Overall a great finale. Nicely wrapped up the murder storyline while giving us some questions to ponder of the summer as we wait for the series’ return in the fall.
